Service Description

Today, our pets play an extremely important role in human health and well-being, encompassing psychological, physiological, therapeutic, and psychosocial aspects. Their role as co-therapists in the emotional and physical aspects of numerous illnesses has allowed the beneficial effects of pet ownership to be utilized therapeutically. Furthermore, scientific evidence has been provided that pets have been able to identify factors implicated in cardiovascular disease, epilepsy, and cancer, and reduce anxiety levels, among others. In Puerto Rico, the abandonment and abuse of animals increases every year, without considering that such abandonment is a reflection of an emotionally ill and abusive society, which lacks sensitivity toward living beings. Animal abuse is closely related to domestic violence. Respect for and the rights of both humans and animals has been undermined and is not discussed. However, despite the difficulties these populations may face, it is important to reflect that within this situation, a stronger human-animal bond has begun to develop. They are now considered a member of the family. Nothing compares to the joy of returning home and finding a loyal companion. The unconditional love of a pet can provide more than companionship. Pets can also reduce stress, improve heart health, and even help children with their emotional and social skills. An estimated 68% of U.S. households have a pet. But who benefits from having an animal? And what kind of pet brings health benefits? Over the past ten years, the National Institute of Health (NIH), together with the Mars Corporation's Waltham Center for Pet Nutrition, have conducted research studies on the potential physical and mental health benefits of sharing pets with different animals, from fish to horses, birds, dogs, and cats.
